Great resources to reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills!

Hybrid working is the future, but what impact does it have on our sustainability efforts as a company?

The impact from hybrid working on sustainability isn’t straightforward. While commuting less reduces emissions, global GHG levels are rebounding. At HubSpot, remote work is now our largest internal carbon emitter, producing nearly 4,000 metric tons in 2021—over half our in-office emissions. To meet our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) goal of a 90% carbon reduction by 2040, we must make hybrid work more sustainable. See our climate commitments here. Whether remote, flex, or in-office, we support employees in adopting eco-friendly habits. Small changes can make a big difference!

What can HubSpotters do at Home?

Unplug Properly

Be sure to turn off and unplug your devices when not in use. Not only will it save you money on your electricity bill, but it can reduce your carbon footprint by about 10%. Using a Smart Plug Power Strip makes it easy to control your energy consumption and ultimately your bill.

Let In The Light

If possible, set up your workspace next to a window. Using natural lighting in your home office is the most effective and sustainable way to bring light into your room. Not only will natural light reduce your energy consumption, but it can also create a positive impact on your mood and overall productivity.

Choose an eco-friendly paint brand in a light shade that will reflect daylight and reduce energy usage.

Ditch the Paper

Use cloud-based notes. If you have to print, use an energy-efficient printer, recycled paper, and try to print on both sides.

Buying a new printer? Look for brands with an ENERGY STAR certification.

Recycle Right

Living a Zero Waste lifestyle…

When we think about sustainability, the first thing that comes to mind is usually recycling. However, if we strive to truly leave no impact on the environment, then we must tackle recycling at the source.

Refuse; At HubSpot, we follow a supplier code of conduct where we Refuse to buy goods and services that could negatively impact the environment. You can incorporate this into personal sustainability efforts by avoiding purchasing from brands that don’t disclose their sustainability.

Reduce ; By making more sustainable choices, we can Reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste that has a negative impact on our environment. This could include eliminating the use of single-use materials, such as printer paper.

Reuse; Try to purchase items that can be easily reused, for example, reusable water bottles, coffee cups, shopping bags, and metal straws.

Repurpose; Sometimes referred to as “Upcycling,” this is a great way to Repurpose items that can no longer be used for their original use. You can repurpose and support your community by donating unwanted items to your local shelter or chosen charity. You could also list your unwanted items on sites such as FreeCycle.

Interested in Upcycling? If you have any mason jars or glass bottles in your kitchen, you can repurpose them into sustainable centerpieces for your dinner table!

Upcycling can also be a great way to involve your family in sustainability efforts. Check out these 16 Unique Upcycled Crafts for Kids

Recycle; If you have to use a single-use item, you should dispose of it in the most environmentally friendly way, Recycle.
