New perspectives through HomeExchange
We had an incredible experience on our trip to Australia in October 2022, where we decided to try home exchange for the first time. Seeking more budget-friendly accommodation options for our month-long journey, we were excited to learn about the HomeExchange platform through a HubSpot Slack channel.
Our exploration took us to Marks Point in Newcastle (there’s one in Australia too!) and the charming town of Gloucester (also in Australia), both offering us unique and comfortable homes to stay in. In Marks Point, we took the opportunity to discover the Hunter Valley, exploring the amazing local wines from that region. Gloucester with a population of a few thousand people was the most quaint little town we could’ve found. We found ourselves amidst the breathtaking Barrington Tops National Park, perfect for relaxing midday picnics surrounded by nature’s beauty.
The hospitality we received in both homes was exceptional. Our hosts went out of their way to ensure our comfort and enjoyment, with personal touches such as providing us with a delicious dinner and a bottle of wine in Marks Point, and sharing their home with their friendly pets in Gloucester – an adorable chocolate labrador and a gorgeous tabby cat (who loved hanging out with us even though I’m sure she could smell our cats).
This experience had a profound impact on our perspective of travel. It not only inspired us to open our own homes to guests but also encouraged us to explore further destinations like Prague and Paris through home exchange. The sustainable and culturally enriching aspects of home exchange have made it our preferred choice of accommodation, offering us the chance to stay in unique locations we might not have otherwise considered.
Home exchange has shown us the kindness of people around the world, reaffirming the belief best described by the Sanskrit saying “the whole world is a family.” It has enriched our travel experiences and deepened our appreciation for cultural exchange and sustainable tourism practices.
